BANGKOK, Jan 29 (TNA) – Thai authorities intercepted about 200-300 methamphetamine pills, smuggled into Thailand through its northern border from Oct 1 to Dec 31, said secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board.
Niyom Termsrisuk, secretary-general of the ONCB told a news conference about the success of its three-month drug crackdown.
Niyom said the proactive operation from Oct 1 to Dec 31 focused on cooperation with neighbouring countries – Myanmar, Laos and China to suppress illegal drug activities in the golden triangle.
More than 1,000 officials were dispatched to intercept two million tonnes of drug precursors from enter the drug production base in the golden triangle.
Related operations stopped illegal drug from entering Thailand through the northern border, the main drug transit route into the kingdom.
Officials could thwart 40.53 per cent of drug smuggling through this channel in 2018.
About 200 methamphetamine pills and 243 million baht of assets were seized from Oct 1 to Dec 31. Search operations in 84,000 target communities led to arrests of 90,000 people in 80,000 drug cases. About 30,000 drug addicts were sent to rehabs and 5,000 drug addicts in the southernborder provinces entered the screen process, half of the target of 10,000 people.
Currently, the agency keeps monitoring for the most spreading methamphetamine, followed by crystal meth and ketamine, mostly prevalent at entertainment venues. (TNA)
