BANGKOK, Nov 2 (TNA) — The European Union has praised Thailand’s efforts to tackle illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and the Thai government expects good news within next month, said Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantrawanit, spokesman of the Defence Ministry.
He said that the government’s national administration reform committee acknowledged the praise from the EU in its 9/2561 meeting on Friday.
Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon chaired the committee’s meeting.
The praise followed the EU’s inspection of fishing in Thailand on Oct 13-19. The EU said Thailand was a good example of solving IUU in the region and there would be good news related to the matter by the end of December, Lt Gen Kongcheep said.
Thailand has considerably reduced devastating coastal fishing in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea and as a result more protected animals show up along the coasts. They included Bryde’s whales, hammerhead sharks and blackfin sharks, Lt Gen Kongcheep said.
He added that the committee was also briefed that the import of 422 items of electronic waste was ended and the import of plastic waste would be gradually reduced until its complete stoppage in 2021. (TNA)
