SONGKHLA, March 31 (TNA) – Nearly 200 Thais have returned
to Thailand after being stranded in Malaysia due to border closure to contain
the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Thai returnees, mostly migrant workers who are on a list
of approved returnees, went through the procedures set by the Malaysian and
Thai authorities.
They will be placed under 14-day health quarantine after
arriving at Sadao checkpoint in Songkhla province.
Under the lockdown by Malaysia, only those who have been
verified by the Thai consulate office are allowed to cross the border.
A woman told reporters with teary eyes that she had to go
through miserable time after the lockdown was enforced in Malaysia.
She said there were still several hundreds of Thai stranded
in Malaysia.
At other border crossings, hundreds of Thais have been
reported stranded as the two countries have closed their checkpoints to stem
the Covid-19 spread.
Thai nationals who wish to return home are required to
contact the Thai Embassy or a consulate to obtain a letter of
certification. They also needed a health
certificate. (TNA)
