BANGKOK, Dec 4 (TNA) – Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce
Minister Jurin Laksanawisit has called a meeting with the private sector
organizations to discuss ways to boost exports that have dropped due to global
slowdown, trade war and strong baht.
Jurin met with representatives from the Thai National Shippers’
Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Industries at
the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday.
The minister said the ministry had implemented several
measures to boost exports; speeding up goods deliveries, signing trade agreements
worth over THB70 billion and other efforts.
Thai exports, however, had been affected by the fragile
global economy. But with concerted
efforts by all parties he believed situation would gradually improve, said
Jurin.
Vice Chairman the Chamber of Commerce Sanan Angubolkul said
Thai exports this year would likely contract 2.5 percent year-on-year.
The sluggish foreign trade would prolong, with projected
growth of only 1 percent next year, he said.
He called for government measures to control baht appreciation
in order to maintain competitiveness of Thai products in the world market.
