BANGKOK, Aug 30 (TNA) – New red-light cameras have been installed
at 30 locations in Bangkok in a bid to improve road safety and monitor
red-light runners.
The red light camera system was capable of capturing
red-light runners in all weather conditions with high-definition infrared cameras,
said traffic police chief Pol Maj General Nithithorn Jintakanon on Friday.
All of the cameras would be turned on to enforce road
regulations on September 1, he said.
The system is the latest installment in the city’s safety
measure aimed at stamping out red-light runners which average at 890 per day.
From a trial run from August 1 to August 25, a total of 22,260
red-light runners were detected, according to police.
Drivers caught on camera running red lights will be issued
citations by mail. Cited red-light
violators are subject to up to Bt1,000 fine. (TNA)
