BANGKOK, Aug 29 (TNA) – The 40th General Assembly of the
ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) concluded in Bangkok on Thursday,
with Thailand passing on the AIPA chairmanship to Vietnam.
More than 400 participants from among 10 ASEAN members and
observer nations attended the 40th AIPA hosted by Thailand from August
26 – 29 under the theme “Advancing Parliamentarian Partnerships for a
Sustainable Community.”
At the conclusion of the annual Assembly, Thailand’s
President of the National Assembly Chuan Leekpai handed over a token of AIPA chairmanship
to Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
Ngan, who will perform the duties of the AIPA President from
October 2019-September 2020, expressed her honour to receive the AIPA chairmanship
and said that she would work to enhance the AIPA’s roles and promote
cooperation among the members.
In his closing statement, Chuan stressed the importance of
mutual understanding among member countries for the benefit of the region.
He congratulated members for taking the first step to
realize the collection and exchange of information on law among ASEAN’s countries.
