BANGKOK, Feb 19 (TNA) – Rumors of Israelis allegedly “taking over” Pai district, a popular tourist destination in Mae Hong Son, and barring Thais from certain businesses, hotels and public spaces have been firmly dismissed by the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
The issue, which sparked concerns about foreign influence in Pai, has prompted an investigation to clarify the facts and address any underlying issues.
Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed these claims are impossible but has ordered a fact-finding investigation. He urged people not to be overly concerned, stating that it’s impossible for Israelis to take over Pai.
While some Israelis may have settled there because they enjoy the atmosphere, he emphasized that any foreign influence over Thai territory would not be tolerated. He noted this situation is not related to the free visa policy.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra also confirmed that the claims were investigated and found to be false. Interior Minister Anutin will visit the area next week.
Meanwhile, the national police chief ordered an investigation to be completed within 7 days. Police forces across regions will work with immigration to check on foreigners gathering in groups and investigate any inappropriate behavior. The investigation aims to address any potential misconduct and ensure the safety and well-being of both residents and tourists.
Despite the controversy, the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Mae Hong Son office has reported that the situation has not negatively impacted tourism in Pai. The office acknowledged some concerns raised by the community, such as transportation issues, traffic law violations and inappropriate dress code, but assured that these matters are being addressed through legal channels.
Previously, the Immigration Bureau deported four Israeli citizens for disrupting the work of doctors and nurses at Pai Hospital.
Moreover, the officials investigated the Israeli synagogue in the area and confirmed it is solely a religious facility for Jewish worship, not a party venue as some had speculated. The inspection found no legal violations. -819 (TNA)
