BANGKOK, March 12 (TNA) – The Department of Agriculture and the private sector organize the Thai Coffee Excellence 2021 contest to find premium arabica and robusta coffee beans. Entries will be accepted until March 31.
It is the first time that the International Coffee Organization gives financial support to the event as Thailand is its member. The organization grants about 1 million baht to support the contest and the international promotion of Thai coffee on the same occasion.
It is also the first time for the contest to cover both arabica and robusta coffee beans instead of receiving only arabica entries.
This year, entries must come from locally grown coffee plants and the 2020/2021 harvesting season. They will be judged by their aromas, flavors and other factors including the flaws, sizes and appearances of beans.
Coffee is an important cash crop of Thailand as it generates as much as 33 billion baht worth of income for growers and related operators annually. Both arabica and robusta coffee plants can grow in the country. Northern Thailand is capable of producing about 9,200 tons of arabica coffee per year. (TNA)
