Moscow, Sept 15 (TNA) – The BRICS Media Summit in Moscow, Russia, has officially commenced as media leaders from around the world have pledged to play a constructive role in addressing the challenges of the new world order characterized by multipolarity and the proliferation of fake news.
Hosted by Russia’s TASS news agency in collaboration with Xinhua News Agency, the BRICS Media Summit kicked off in Moscow, Russian Federation on Sept 14. Over 60 leading media entities and media outlets from 45 countries attended, including those from BRICS member nations, rapidly developing economies, and non-BRICS countries such as Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
During the opening ceremony, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov delivered a video speech emphasizing that BRICS is a crucial multilateral cooperation mechanism and a cornerstone of the multipolar world. He highlighted the significant role of media cooperation among BRICS countries in promoting international relations, fostering public understanding, and strengthening mutual trust and understanding. Lavrov expressed hope that the summit would further enhance exchanges and cooperation, and play a constructive role in presenting information about BRICS countries.
Andrey Kondrashov, Director General of Russia’s TASS news agency, pointed out that the role of BRICS in the global arena has become increasingly significant in various aspects, including international politics, economics, and culture. Beyond reporting on political and economic cooperation, BRICS media should also actively serve as a bridge connecting people from different countries.
Fu Hua, Executive Chairman of the BRICS Media Forum and Director of the Xinhua News Agency, highlighted that the world today faces unprecedented changes and numerous challenges. However, BRICS countries remain committed to promoting joint development and prosperity, as well as contributing to stability in a world full of challenges and changes.
Fu Hua emphasized that promoting the shared values and positive energy of BRICS countries towards building a community with a shared future for mankind will undoubtedly contribute to a future of cooperation and shared prosperity.
The media organization leaders participating in the BRICS Media Summit agreed that in an era where the world is full of multipolarity, the role of mass media is crucial in eliminating misunderstandings and countering the spread of fake news. They also recognized the importance of BRICS countries and media working together to promote equality and justice in the global community for the benefit of the Global South and East.
Yohannes Wondirad, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Partnerships at the Ethiopian News Agency, representing new BRICS member Ethiopia, highlighted the importance of the BRICS media community in promoting stability and cooperation in a multipolar world. With a combined population of 3.5 billion, representing 45% of the global population, the more united the media in BRICS countries, the more they can create positive change. Moreover, the BRICS media community can serve as a voice to attract investment, leading to economic and social development.
BRICS was founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In 2024, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates joined as new members.
Currently, around 40 countries have expressed their interest in applying to become new member states. This includes Thailand, which submitted a letter of intent in May 2024.
This year’s BRICS summit will be held from October 22-24 in Kazan, Russian Federation. -819 (TNA)
