BANGKOK, Oct 9 (TNA) – Thai police hail the biometrics
system that has helped detect over 45,000 foreigners overstaying their visas in
the past four months.
The Immigration Bureau of the Royal Thai Police installed
the biometrics system including screen procedure at airports in June.
Immigration Bureau commissioner Pol Lt-General Sompong
Chingduang said on Wednesday the system had constantly led to arrests of
foreigners who were blacklisted and using fake passports.
Since June, over 45,000 foreigners had been arrested for
overstaying their visas thanks to the biometrics system, he said, adding that
he arrests also resulted THB90 million in fines.
The new biometrics system had improved Thailand’ security
measures to meet the international standard, said Pol Lt-General Sompong. (TNA)
