BANGKOK, Dec 4 (TNA) – Convenience stores, shopping malls and markets nationwide join hand to stop giving single-use plastic bags to customers across the country to mark the Thai Environment Day today.
Single-use plastic bags become about two million tonnes of plastic waste in Thailand.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has launched the campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags by cooperating with large-scaled retailers to stop giving plastic bags to shoppers today.
The measure will be implemented continuously on the fourth of every month.
In the past year, Thailand could cut the use of 350 million plastic bags. With proactive measures, it is expected to cut 20 per cent or about 900 million plastic bags next year.
According to the Pollution Control Department and the Plastics Institute of Thailand, the country uses about 45 billion plastic bags annually. (TNA)
