BANGKOK. Dec 17 (TNA) – The Department of Health has issued a warning about a potential norovirus outbreak during the upcoming festive season when gatherings and travel are common.
Dr. Thiti Sawaengtham, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Health, highlighted the recent norovirus outbreak affecting over 1,400 students and staff at two schools in Klaeng district, Rayong province.
Norovirus, often associated with outbreaks of gastroenteritis, is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in schools, restaurants, hospitals, childcare facilities, and on cruise ships, particularly during colder months. The virus can be transmitted through contaminated food, water, and surfaces, as well as through direct contact with infected individuals.
Symptoms of norovirus infection typically include nausea, severe vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, low-grade fever, fatigue, headache, and muscle aches. In severe cases, especially among young children and the elderly, dehydration can occur.
To prevent the spread of norovirus, the Department of Health recommends people consume only freshly cooked food and use separate utensils, avoid drinking contaminated water, thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables and wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the restroom.
For institutions and businesses, especially those in the food service industry, the Department of Health recommends implementing preventive measures such as regularly monitoring the quality of drinking water and providing adequate handwashing facilities with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer. -819 (TNA)
