KRABI, May 14 (TNA) – The Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park has announced a temporary closure of certain diving areas to mitigate the impact of human activities on the ongoing coral bleaching phenomenon.
Shallow diving is temporarily prohibited at Koh Kai (North, East, and West sides), Koh Poda (North side), Koh Dang , Railay Bay, Koh Yawasam and surrounding reefs. Scuba diving activities in the vicinity of Koh Yawasam and surrounding reefs will be temporarily suspended starting May 16.
The temporary closure will remain in effect until the coral bleaching situation has stabilized. Park officials urge visitors to respect these restrictions and refrain from engaging in diving activities in the affected areas.
The decision to close certain diving sites was made following a thorough underwater survey conducted by park rangers. The survey revealed that coral bleaching has affected 50-70% of the coral reefs in the surveyed areas, with another 5-20% exhibiting signs of stress. The closure aims to minimize further disturbance to the corals and allow them to recover.
Despite the closure of certain diving areas, other tourist attractions will remain open and accessible to visitors. These include Thale Waek, Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon. -819 (TNA)
