BANGKOK, July 25 (TNA) – In a sudden turn of events, the Pheu Thai party has informed the media of the cancellation of today’s joint meeting involving eight coalition parties.
The decision came after the morning announcement of a change in the meeting venue, originally scheduled at the Pheu Thai party headquarters at 2 p.m. to the Parliament building at 3 p.m., reportedly to avoid potential protests by demonstrators planning to gather at the party headquarters.
Before noon, the meeting was cancelled and the party’s leaders could not be contacted for comment. Speculation arose that there might be internal discussions within the party.
Meanwhile a coalition party said Pheu Thai’s negotiations to gain more support for the formation of a new government has not made much progress, so today’s meeting was cancelled.
Earlier in the morning, outside the Pheu Thai Party headquarters, a group of party supporters raised signs that read, “Fight on! The people are waiting for hope. We want a Prime Minister chosen by the people.” They called for unity among the parties and urged them to quickly select a Prime Minister to address the challenges faced by the people, including the high cost of living.
Meanwhile, security measures have been tightened at its headquarters requiring external individuals to exchange identification cards before entering the premises. The measure is seen as being applied in response to Sunday’s incident, when a political group gained access to the office’s second floor and staged a symbolic demonstration, throwing flour to representatives of the Palang Pracharath party.
As a result, the party discussed with the Makkasan Police Station to enhance security. (TNA)
