BANGKOK, Aug 7 (TNA) – China has announced to cut water discharge from the Jinghong dam next week as Thailand has prepared to handle the impacts on people living in eight provinces along the river.
Somkiat Prachamwong, Secretary-General of the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) said that China’s Ministry of Water Resources sent a letter to ONWR on Aug 5, saying the Jinghong dam would reduce water discharge from 1,100 to 600-800 cubic meter per second from Aug 11-15 for power cable maintenance of the hydroelectric power plant.
The ONWR would assess and closely monitor the water situation in the Mekong River, Mr Somkiat said.
It also informed the governors of eight provinces along the Mekong River and related agencies to evaluate impacts of the decreasing water level and to prepare measures to handle the situation, he added. (TNA)
