BANGKOK, Aug 7 (TNA) – Thailand’s Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) has ordered a recall of textured silicone breast implants after
a report showed the products’ link with a cancer of the immune system.
The products under the trademark Natrelle have been reported
to have a link with a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosed in about 800
patients worldwide.
“One of the patients is Thai but there is no need to panic,”
said FDA secretary-general Tares Krassanairawiwong at a press conference on
Tuesday.
About 29,000 of the products were distributed in Thailand by
Allegan (Thailand) and Neopharm since 2011; 14,000 of them had been used, he
said.
“Recipients of the products do not need to remove them
because the chance of cancer is very low,” Dr Tares said.
However, those who had swollen or inflamed breasts must see
their doctors immediately, he noted.(TNA)
