BANGKOK, July 16 (TNA) – The government is encouraging temple-goers to use tiffin carriers instead of plastic bags and Styrofoam boxes for environmental conservation.
Deputy government spokesman Werachon Sukondhapatipak said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha invited Buddhists to visit temples to traditionally make merits on the occasion of the Asanha Bucha Day and the Buddhist Lent Day.
The prime minister also asked temple-goers to use tiffin carriers to carry food and desserts to temples to revive an old lifestyle before plastic bags and Styrofoam boxes became popular. That was to reduce the use of plastic bags and Styrofoam boxes that affected the environment, Lt Gen Werachon said.
“The prime minister stressed that the government is proceeding with the proper disposal of plastic waste to protect the environment… Today many parties in the government, private and civil sectors are cooperating well. So Buddhists should take this opportunity to use tiffin carriers, cloth bags or baskets to carry food to temples instead of using plastic bags,” the deputy government spokesman said.
Besides, the prime minister encouraged the management of temples nationwide to convert organic waste and leftovers into fertilizers and bio-extract to protect the environment and support farming simultaneously. (TNA)
