BANGKOK, June 4 (TNA) – Thai shippers cut export growth
target this year from 3 percent to 1 percent, due to negative factors that
could lead to export contraction.
The Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) on Tuesday
announced its revised projection of export growth amid declines of Thai
shipments to major markets resulted from the US-China trade war.
TNSC Chairman Ghanyapad Tantipipatpong said that the 1
percent forecast was the most optimistic projection, admitting the tendency
towards contraction.
The growing tensions arising from the trade war threatened
Thai manufacturing goods, especially electronics, she noted.
Thai exports in April dropped 2.6 percent year on year,
totaling US$18.55 billion. For the first
four months of 2019, Thailand’s exports shrunk 1.9 percent, according to the
TNSC.
The Council had proposed recommendations for the next
government to handle trade volatility, such as speeding up trade negotiations
to boost exports, stabilizing exchange rates and promoting electronic commerce
platforms, she added. (TNA)
