BANGKOK, June 4 (TNA) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will suspend rental fee for one year for vendors, whose shops were damaged in the fire at the Chatuchak weekend market.
Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang told vendors about the assistance measures during inspection at the burnt-out sections at Zone 25 on Monday.
About 110 shops, occupying 1,000 squares meters were damaged in the fire that occurred around 9 pm. on Sunday when the market was closed.
Each affected vendors will receive 10,000 baht in compensation from the city hall, the governor said.
Officials will set up 15 makeshift tents as temporary stalls for them to sell their goods pending reconstruction of the new shops.
The BMA will spend its budget of seven million baht for the construction, expected to be completed in two months. The rental fee will be exempted for vendors for one year.
The assistance measures satisfied the vendors.
The site has been cordoned off and forensic officials are still working to gather evidence to determine the cause of the blaze.
The governor said old transformer and electrical wiring may cause the short circuit. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority will be asked to check the electricity system and install more transformers for high demand of power use at the market.
The cost of damage has not yet been estimated. (TNA)
