PHITSANULOK, May 13 (TNA) – Teams of eel catchers get down
in a muddy pond to collect slippery creatures at an agricultural fair in
Thailand’s upper central province of Phitsanulok.
The contest was a highlight of the annual fair to strengthen
the unity among the locals. Contestants
were given time to catch the largest number of eels and place them in the
bamboo baskets.
Eel-catching illustrates local tradition blended with fun
and amusing atmosphere.
The Mueang district team came up victorious with 15 eels
beating the runner-up Wat Bot district who managed to catch 12.
Organised by the provincial agricultural office and farmers’
associations, the fair is aimed at promoting agricultural development
programmes and boost morale of farmers at the beginning of the rice-cultivation
season. (TNA)
