CHIANG MAI, Feb 20 (TNA) – Smog from forest fires has shrouded Chiang Mai as air pollution has risen to unhealthy levels.
On Wednesday morning, the PM 2.5 particulate matter was measured at 58 microgramme per cubic metre of air (ug/m3) at Government Complex in the provincial seat and 53 ug/m3 at Yupparaj Wittayalai School. The safety threshold is 50 ug/m3.
Local authorities blamed outdoor and forest burning in Chiang Mai and Lamphun as the major cause of the ongoing air pollution. Officials are trying to arrest those, who defy a ban on burning.
In lower northern province of Phichit, police, soldiers and Land Transport Department officials set up road checkpoints on a highway to bust vehicles, emitting black exhaust fumes that exceed the safety limit.
Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Department reported PM2.5 dust particles in Bangkok and surrounding provinces have dropped from yesterday and stay within the safe level in all areas. (TNA)
