BANGKOK, Jan 2 (TNA) – Although strong road safety campaigns reduce traffic casualties during the New Year holiday, the government remains unhappy and will intensify its campaigns to raise public awareness on road safety, the interior minister said.
Gen Anupong Paojinda, the interior minister, said that despite the lower casualties and determined road safety campaigns, the government was concerned because speed and drunk driving remained the most common of road accidents.
It was important to raise motorists’ responsibilities and safety caution, he said.
On six days of the New Year travel period from Dec 27 to Jan 1 there were 3,425 traffic accidents which killed 410 people and injured 3,516 others.
Nakhon Si Thammarat saw the biggest number of accidents, 109, and the highest number of injured people, 127. The highest death toll, 24, was recorded in Nakhon Ratchasima province.
The overall damage was lower than the same period of last year, Gen Anupong said. (TNA)
