PHUKET, Dec 26 (TNA) – The Andaman coastal provinces today held multi-faith religious ceremonies and memorial services to mark the 14th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed more than 5,000 people in Thailand.
In Phuket, the ceremony was held at the Mai Khao cemetery, where the bodies were kept for the identification process after the deadly disaster. Flowers were placed on the cemetery’s wall, decorated with the flags for the dead victims from 45 countries.
Krabi province held the memorial services on Phi Phi island. Photos of the victims, who lost their lives in the tidal wave, were on display. The multi-faith ceremonies were held to make merit for the deceased. Divers laid wreaths at the underwater tsunami memorial on the seabed in Tonsai Bay.
Thailand’s six Andaman coastal provinces were hit by tsunami on the boxing day. The devastating disaster killed about 5,400 people including foreign tourists and locals, leaving about 2,800 others missing. (TNA)
