BANGKOK, Dec 14 (TNA) – Book publishers welcomes the government’s approval for tax deduction for purchases of books and e-books.
Taxpayers receive a maximum 15,000- baht income tax deduction for purchases of books and e-books from Dec 15 to Jan 16.
Vice Minister of Culture, Ms Chaweerat Kasetsoontorn said that it is the first time the Cabinet approved tax deduction for purchases of books. The measure is aimed at encouraging Thai people to read more for self-development and to support book publishing businesses to survive in the digital age.
President of the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand, Suchada Sahaskul said this policy benefits the nation. The tax deduction campaign will promote reading habits among people and encourage them to buy books as New Year’s gifts for others. The money from book purchases will be circulated in the country as writers, translators and book producers are Thai. The book publishers will be encouraged to create new good books.
Publishers and sellers are ready to offer variety of books, available in the New Year’s gift sets for bookworms. However, newspapers and magazines cannot be claimed for tax deduction. Receipts must be kept for submission when they file tax return. (TNA)
