BANGKOK, Nov 21 (TNA) – Bangkok governor inspects safety
conditions of piers along the Chao Phraya River and canals in preparation for
the Loy Krathong Festival on Thursday.
Aswin Kwanmuang said 348 out of 436 piers in Bangkok that
had passed safety check would be opened for the public for the Festival.
Millions of revelers are expected to release their
krathongs, or water floats, on Thursday night in the ancient festival to
worship goddess of river and signifying of dismissal of bad lucks.
After taking an inspection tour, Governor Aswin assured that
safety measures would be implemented at the 348 designated piers.
Each pier would be manned with safety officers with safety
equipment and instructions, he said.
Up to 30 people will be allowed each time on small piers and
80 people on large ones. The Bangkok
Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has warned that fireworks and sky lanterns
are banned, violators are subject to up to three years in prison and Bt60,000
fine.
With its origin dates back many centuries; Loy Krathong is
celebrated on the full moon day of the 12th month of traditional Thai. (TNA)
