BANGKOK, Nov 14 (TNA) – Malaysian and Thai police have
signed an agreement establishing cooperation in a wide range of areas including
crime suppression and joint efforts to resolve the dual citizenship issue.
Royal Thai Police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda and
Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun
co-chaired the 25th Departmental Review of the Joint Thailand-Malaysia Working
Committee Meeting on Criminal Activities in Bangkok on Wednesday.
Speaking about criminals holding dual citizenship of
Thailand and Malaysia, Mohamad Fuzi said holders of dual citizenship would be
required to take up only one citizenship.
Malaysia would update database in order to tackle the issue,
he said.
Many dual citizenship holders committing criminal acts,
mostly related to the insurgency in southern Thailand, have been allegedly
fleeing to Malaysia.
Criminals breaking the laws in Malaysia also fled to
Thailand, Mohamad Fuzi said.
The two countries’ police forces also agree to step up
efforts to tackle cross-border crimes with the cooperation agreement.
Pol General Chakthip said both sides had constantly enhanced
their cooperation in crime suppression from drug trafficking to transnational
terror groups.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed various issues
including good smuggling, human trafficking, the threat posed by Islamic State
and other transnational crimes.(TNA)
