CHIANG MAI, Nov 12 (TNA) — Dr Sorawit Thaneto, Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development said that the Department and the Thai Veterrinary Medical Association under Royal Patronage are hosting the 15th International Symposium of Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics (ISVEE) with the Thai Veterinary Medical Association between November 12-16 in Chiang Mai.
More than 700 attendees from 69 countries attended the international gathering.
Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Grisada Boonrach assigned his deputy Luck Wajananawat to preside over the opening ceremony of the event on November 12.
The meeting provides Thailand with an invaluable platform to showcase its achievements in the prevention and control of epidemic diseases to the world.
The current international focus on the spread of epidemics and disease is at its peak with concerns over the spread of animal diseases to humans the priority. Some of these include bird flu, rabies, African swine flu and foot-and-mouth disease and as such the importance of the event to the country’s agricultural sector cannot be overlooked.
Dr Somchuan Ratanamungklanon, the deputy director-general of the Department of Livestock Development in his capacity as president of the Thai Veterrinary Medical Association under Royal Patronage said that ISVEE is organised every three years and Thailand is the first Asian country to be given the honour of hosting the event in 25 years.
The event is supported and sponsored by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Animal Production and Health Commission for Asia and the Pacific (APHCA), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). (TNA)
