UBON RATCHATHANI, July 21 (TNA) – The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has reported the discovery of two new, active PMN2 anti-personnel landmines in the Chong Bok area, near where three soldiers were injured by a mine explosion on July 16.
The RTA asserts this is a clear violation of Thailand’s sovereignty and the Ottawa Treaty, signed by both Thailand and Cambodia.
Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree, RTA spokesperson, stated that forces found the new mines just 30 centimeters from the original blast site. These have since been defused and removed.
The RTA views this act as an intentional effort to harm Thai military personnel and a breach of the landmine ban.
The Directorate of Army Intelligence will also brief foreign military attachés on the incident tomorrow. -819 (TNA)
