BANGKOK, June 23 (TNA) – Tensions are escalating on the Thai-Cambodian border with multiple crossing points now closed.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered the closure of two additional border crossings in Oddar Meanchey province (Choub Korki and Choam), citing Thailand’s indefinite closure of the Chong Sai Taku border checkpoints.
The closure orders are for two Cambodian checkpoints located directly opposite Thailand’s Chong Sai Taku checkpoint in Buriram Province and the Chong Sa Ngam checkpoint in Sisaket Province.
Cross-border trade sees most Cambodian citizens purchasing consumer goods, produce, and fertilizers from Thailand. Conversely, Thais typically cross to buy alcohol, beer, and cigarettes within regulated limits, with some also visiting casinos.
Both nations have issued travel advisories. Thailand’s Consular Affairs Department urges Thais in Cambodia to exercise caution and avoid risky areas. Similarly, Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Thailand and to exercise caution if already there.
Security forces on the Thai side are maintaining strict control along the border to prevent illegal crossings and criminal activities. Local businesses near the border are already reporting significant economic hardship due to the closures. -819 (TNA)
