BANGKOK, Jan 2 (TNA) – Thailand’s road death toll during the New Year holiday period, known as the “10 Dangerous Days,” has reached 272 in the first six days, with Surat Thani province reporting the highest number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported that on January 1 alone, there were 339 accidents, resulting in 50 deaths and 346 injuries.
The cumulative figures from December 27, 2024, to January 1, 2025, show a total of 1,739 accidents, with 272 deaths and 1,694 injuries.
The primary cause of accidents was speeding, followed by drunk driving. Motorcycles were the most common type of vehicle involved in accidents.
Surat Thani province recorded the highest cumulative figures, with 63 accidents, 73 injuries, and 12 deaths.
DDPM Director-General Phatsakorn Boonyalak emphasized that provinces have been instructed to maintain checkpoints and patrols on main roads to prevent and deter traffic violations, including speeding, drunk driving, not wearing helmets, and not using seatbelts. Provinces are also tasked with ensuring traffic safety and facilitating smooth travel.
The top three provinces with the highest cumulative number of drunk driving cases were Bangkok (420 cases), Chiang Mai (418 cases), and Nonthaburi (325 cases). -819 (TNA)
