BANGKOK, Dec 8 (TNA) – The Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration announced two potential Omicron cases in the country – two unvaccinated Thai women who worked as interpreters and returned from Nigeria.
Dr. Sumanee Wacharasin, assistant spokesperson for CCSA, said infections with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 were reported in 56 countries but it had not caused a fatality. Besides, today Thailand found two potential Omicron cases among three Thai people who attended a Christian conference in Lagos, Nigeria, on Nov 13-23, she said.
The two infected persons are female Thai interpreters aged 36 and 46. Both tested negative for COVID-19 in Nigeria on Nov 21 with the RT-PCR testing technique. On Nov 23, they had a slight sore throat. Upon their return, they were quarantined right away because they had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Their RT-PCR tests upon arrival returned positive and they were admitted to hospital for treatment. Samples from both persons were analyzed and there were high possibilities that they were infected with Omicron.
Officials concerned were conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if they were infected with the new COVID-19 variant. The results would be known in a few days, Dr. Sumanee said. (TNA)
