BANGKOK, July 22 (TNA) – The government ordered public universities to halve their tuition fees and private universities to give a 5,000-baht discount to each student right away.
Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Minister Anek Laothamatas said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha approved his ministry’s proposal on the tuition cut to relieve people’s burden of educational expenditures amid the COVID-19 crisis.
The ministry proposed that public universities give various discounts on parts of tuition and educational service fees. The discount was set at 50% for the fees are not higher than 50,000 baht, 30% for the parts between 50,001 and 100,000 baht and 10% for the parts of the fees at 100,001 baht and over.
The government will pay 60% of the discounts and universities will cover the rest 40%.
For private universities, the government will offer a subsidy worth 5,000 baht to each student and they will cut their fees accordingly.
Mr Anek said the measure took effect in the first semester of 2021 and would benefit about 1.75 million students.
