ฺBANGKOK, July 4 (TNA) – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra today began her tenure as the new Minister of Culture, expressing enthusiasm for the role despite her temporary suspension as Prime Minister.
Arriving at the Ministry of Culture Friday morning, Paetongtarn, in purple Thai silk, received a warm welcome from Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Jungrungruangkit, other ministers, officials, and Pheu Thai Party members. She appeared cheerful, greeting everyone present.
Following the ceremonies, former Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol offered her support, and they viewed the Creative Thai Cultural Product (CPOT) project.
During a meeting with Ministry staff, Permanent Secretary highlighted the historical significance of a Prime Minister simultaneously holding the Culture portfolio—only the second time in history. He emphasized this dual role would shine a spotlight on the Ministry, boosting its influence and solidifying Thailand’s soft power on the global stage. He assured Paetongtarn of the Ministry’s full support in achieving her goals.
Paetongtarn expressed her delight at the day’s start, agreeing that the Ministry of Culture is crucial for national policies like soft power. She asserted that Thai culture has global appeal and inherent value.
“While I’m temporarily paused as Prime Minister, I’m very glad to fully embrace my role as Culture Minister,” she stated. “I want this Ministry to grow, like South Korea’s, which uses culture as a primary income generator for its people. I aim for the Ministry of Culture to be a key driver of new opportunities and professions for Thais.”
She thanked everyone for the warm welcome, affirming her readiness and energy for the work ahead. She also light-heartedly asked for recommendations for good restaurants within the Ministry, eliciting laughter from the officials. Her visit concluded with photos with the Ministry staff, amid a joyful atmosphere. – 819 (TNA)
