Thailand’s Bhumjaithai Party today announced its immediate withdrawal from the ruling coalition, with all its ministers tendering resignations effective June 19.
The party cited a leaked audio clip of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, which it deemed negatively impacted Thailand’s sovereignty, national interests, and armed forces.” Bhumjaithai also demanded the Prime Minister take responsibility for “dishonoring the nation.”
Prior to the formal announcement late Wednesday, a core party leader confirmed Bhumjaithai is prepared to act as the opposition. They are ready to scrutinize the government, especially if their members, notably party leader Anutin Charnvirakul, are removed from the cabinet.
The party had previously rejected Pheu Thai’s request to reclaim the Interior Ministry portfolio, citing strong opposition to Pheu Thai’s proposed “Entertainment Complex” (casino) policy. Bhumjaithai believes its long-standing anti-casino stance has widespread public support, a position a move to opposition would not hinder.
