SAMUT SAKHON, April 30 (TNA) – A man has died after a large concrete slab fell from an elevated structure onto his pickup truck on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon province, just outside Bangkok.
The victim, 46 sustained severe injuries, including internal bleeding and a ruptured liver, after two concrete pieces, approximately 30×50 cm each, crashed through his windshield. He was rushed to Vibharam Hospital where he underwent surgery but later succumbed to his injuries, according to medical reports.
The incident occurred on the outbound express lane of Rama II Road. The concrete is believed to have broken off from the underside of the Mahachai-Krathumbaen elevated bridge, which has been in use for 30 years, according to the director of the Samut Sakhon Highway District.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Juangroongruangkit clarified that the incident was not related to the ongoing construction of the Rama II elevated expressway project managed by the Expressway Authority of Thailand, which runs parallel to Rama II Road. He has instructed the Director-General of the Department of Highways to oversee the maintenance of older bridges and to prevent similar incidents in the future. -819 (TNA)
