MAE HONG SON, Feb 26 (TNA) – Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Wednesday visited the Chabad House in Pai, Mae Hong Son province after reports of Israeli nationals settling and causing disturbances.
Anutin’s visit, accompanied by Israeli Ambassador Orna Sagiv, aimed to address public concerns and dispel what authorities deemed “fake news.”
A Jewish leader there denied any intention to “seize” Pai, stating Thailand belongs to Thais. Rabbi Nehemya Wihelm, explained the Chabad House’s activities, emphasizing open access for all after security checks.
He addressed the discrepancy between online rumors of 30,000 Israeli residents and the reality of 40-50 permanent residents, explaining the high volume of annual Israeli tourists who stay for short periods.
Wihelm expressed regret over misunderstandings, affirming Israelis’ love for Thailand. He clarified that the site wasn’t a “promised land” and denied any secret tunnels, showing ongoing construction was for bathhouses and a ritual pool.
Anutin later inspected Pai’s walking street, ensuring tourist safety. -819 (TNA)
