NARATHIWAT, Feb 24 (TNA) – Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Sunday visited Thailand’s southern border provinces, stating that peace progress in the region will become evident this year and conclude next year. He also apologized for the Tak Bai incident from 20 years ago.
This marks Thaksin’s first visit to the region in nearly 20 years, coinciding with the period of unrest that began in 2004 during his premiership. Despite two bombing incidents – one at a convenience store in Bannang Sata, Yala, which killed one civilian and injured 11 others, and a car bomb near Narathiwat Airport with no casualties – Thaksin’s delegation proceeded with their scheduled visit under tight security.
Thaksin, now serving as ASEAN Chair’s advisor, was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Justice Minister Pol. Col. Tawee Sodsong. The delegation visited several locations including Prachum Cholthara Temple in Narathiwat, Islamic schools in Narathiwat and Pattani and TK PARK – a learning and activity center for youth in Yala.
During the visit, Thaksin said he came in three capacities: as ASEAN Chair’s advisor, former Prime Minister, and supporter of the Pheu Thai government led by his daughter.
He expressed optimism about peace prospects, stating that positive signs would emerge this year with resolution expected next year. Regarding the bombings, Thaksin dismissed them as symbolic acts meant to intimidate him, saying he’s “not easily frightened.”
The delegation concluded their visit at House of Sri Yala, meeting with Parliament President Wan Muhamad Noor Matha to discuss southern border provinces development. -819 (TNA)
