PATTANI, Feb 7 (TNA) – One police officer was killed and four others were injured in a bomb blast in southern Thailand’s Pattani province on Friday morning, police said.
The explosion occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. at Don Yang Intersection on Highway 43 in Nong Chik district, while police officers were patrolling the area to provide security for teachers and the public.
The perpetrators planted an improvised explosive device in a garbage bin next to a guard post and detonated it when the police officers arrived,” said Police Colonel Kritsada Kaewchan, superintendent of Nong Chik Police Station.
Pol Cpl Anucha Kwanthong-on was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries. Four other police officers were injured in the blast.
Police believe that insurgents in the area were responsible for the attack, which aimed to create unrest in the southern border provinces.
Police have increased security measure as security intelligence warned that insurgents were planning to carry out multiple attacks in the area. -819 (TNA)
