TAK, Dec 3 (TNA) – Thai authorities have dismantled a massive illegal cable network that was being used to power cross-border call center scam operations.
The network, which spanned nearly three kilometers and crossed the Thai-Myanmar border, is believed to be the largest of its kind ever discovered in the country.
In a joint operation, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and the Royal Thai Police raided a site near the Mae Sot Friendship Bridge, where they found 16 large cables illegally strung across the border.
The cables were connected to a network of towers that provided internet and telecommunications services to a large area on the Myanmar side, used for illegal call center operations.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for setting up and operating the illegal network. The perpetrators face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to 10 million baht under the Telecommunications Business Act. -819 (TNA)
