UTHAI THANI, Oct 3 (TNA) – Relatives and family members gathered on Thursday to mourn the 23 victims of a school bus fire in Uthai Thani province, as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the tragedy.
The multipurpose building at Wat Khao Phra Ya Sangkharam School was adorned with white flowers as grieving families arrived throughout the morning. Many struggled to come to terms with the loss of their loved ones in the field trip accident.
Investigators have confirmed a gas leak at the front of the bus, but the exact cause of ignition remains unclear. Pol.Lt.Gen. Trairong Phewphan, Commander of the Central Forensic Science Office, stated that there are two hypotheses under consideration, though details were not disclosed.
The bus company owner was questioned for three hours but declined to comment publicly. Officials confirmed the bus had 11 gas cylinders installed, exceeding the legal limit of six.
Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit announced government compensation for victims’ families, including 1 million baht ($30,000) for each fatality and varying amounts for injuries.
Additional compensation from ministries and the bus company’s insurance is expected to total approximately 1.4 million baht ($42,000).
Thammasat University Hospital reported on two critically injured girls, aged 7 and 9, both suffering from severe burns and respiratory issues. Medical teams are providing intensive care and specialized treatments for their injuries. -819 (TNA)
