BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) – The Corrections Department has announced that Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom, has passed away while in custody and the cause of her death is under investigation.
The department has issued press release on her death after she was pronounced dead at Thammasat University Hospital, where medical professionals had attempted to resuscitate her.
She was transferred from Correctional Hospital to Thammasat University Hospital in unconscious state this morning after suffering a cardiac arrest.
CPR was performed for nearly 2 hours before she was pronounced dead at 11.22 a.m.
The department expressed its condolences to her family and confirmed that medical personnel had provided her with close care. They are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death and have established a committee to investigate the facts.
According to the Corrections Department, Nettiporn was transferred from Thammasat University Hospital to the Corrections Hospital on April 4, 2024. She was able to eat and drink normally, but she experienced weakness and slight swelling in her legs. Her blood test results indicated mild anemia and low electrolytes. However, she refused to take mineral supplements and blood-boosting vitamins, which may have contributed to her death.
The Prime Minister and Justice Minister have expressed their concern about the incident and have ordered Thammasat University Hospital to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The Justice Minister has also instructed the formation of a committee to investigate the matter.
Netiporn, a 28-year-old activist, has been detained since January 26, 2024, after the Criminal Court revoked her bail in a lese majeste case related to a poll she conducted about a royal motorcade. As of today, she has been in custody for 110 days. -819 (TNA)
