AYUTTHAYA, Sept 2 (TNA) – Defence Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha visited Ayutthaya province to inspect flood prevention efforts including the construction and maintenance of embankments by the military.
Gen Prayut paid the visit together with Deputy Defence Minister Chaichan Changmongkol.
They went to Wat Kasatrathirat Worawihan to see the construction and maintenance of embankments. There they gave moral support to soldiers from the 11th Cavalry Battalion who installed 2.2-meter-high stainless steel embankments on a distance of 490 meters and stacked up 11,800 sandbags to prevent flooding.
The cavalry battalion was assigned to prevent flooding at important sites in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district, including Wat Chaiwattanaram, Wat Thammaram and Wat Kasatrathirat Worawihan. Water pumps were also installed to drain floodwater in the event that the Chao Phraya River overflows there despite the embankments.
Meanwhile, the governor of Ayutthaya expressed his concern about possible flooding, saying the Chao Phraya barrage was discharging deluges of water into the lower section of the Chao Phraya River. (TNA)
