BANGKOK, June 22 (TNA) – Police of the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) arrested Metha Chalingsuk, 42, the owner of the Daruma Sushi restaurant chain, for alleged public fraud through the sales of 199-baht vouchers before the shutdown of his restaurants.
CPPD commander Pol Maj Gen Anan Nanasombat said the suspect was arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport after arriving from Taiwan. He was wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court for public fraud and computer crime.
Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, said Mr Metha bowed to pressures from officials and returned to Thailand.
According to the commissioner, Mr Metha fled to the United States on June 16. He was quoted as saying that the restaurant business had liquidity problems, so he tried to maintain it by selling 199-baht vouchers which were unrealistically cheap. The solution later proved to be unfeasible and he fled to the US. (TNA)
