BANGKOK, May 25 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha received seedlings of Takhian (Hopea odorata) plants from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on the occasion of the National Tree Day.
In an event to mark the National Tree Day, Sarawut Silpa-archa, minister of natural resources and environment, said the National Tree Day was set on the Visakha Puja Day to encourage general people and organizations to rehabilitate forests in the country in order to cushion the impacts of climate change and smog.
As the Visakha Puja Day falls on May 26 this year, the minister said he took the opportunity to hand seedlings of Takhian plants to the prime minister and seedlings of other plants to deputy prime ministers and other cabinet ministers so that they would have them planted. The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry already delivered seedlings to people for the same purpose.
Prime Minister Prayut said that the government planned to invite neighboring countries to collectively plant trees possibly in border areas and reduce field burning which caused air pollution and environment impacts. (TNA)
