BANGKOK, Dec 23 (TNA) — The Immigration Bureau will deploy its smart patrol vehicles among other measures to detect criminals in order to ensure public safety during the New Year holiday.
Immigration police commissioner Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduang said his bureau would deploy its smart patrol cars at border checkpoints and in border areas to watch out for crime and illegal immigrants.
Immigration police using such vehicles could detect fake passports, wanted persons and fake license plates, the commissioner said.
Besides, immigration police including plainclothes ones will be at festive areas such as Khao San Road to boost safety.
To speed up immigration services at international airports, immigration police planned their services based on statistics on the numbers of tourists in the past. Extra immigration booths could be opened as the number of tourists passing international airports would rise by 160,000 a day, Pol Lt Gen Sompong said. He recommended travelers to arrive at airports three hours before their flights.
He was confident that security could be guaranteed during the New Year festival, saying a biometric system has been operated for about six months and led to the arrest of about 3,000 foreign criminals and the seizure of about 100 fake passports at immigration booths. (TNA)
