BANGKOK, Sept 27 (TNA) – The World Health Organization (WHO) projected that major depressive disorder (MDD) will move to the first place by 2030 as the leading cause of the global burden of disease, said a Thai doctor.
Krisda Sirampuj, director of the International Anti-Ageing Medicine Institute said major physical disorders like coronary diseases, which are the primary cause of deaths globally could be overtaken by depression by the year 2030.
It is also estimated by the WHO that suicide would be ranked the second place as the cause of deaths among people in the age bracket of 15-29 years.
The deaths, caused by depression are at the alarming rate although it is curable with pharmaceutical treatments. This is because only about half of the patients seek medical treatment, he said.
In some countries, only 10 per cent of patients, suffering from depression see the doctors.
Raising awareness among patients to seek medical advice and take medication will help tackle the problem about committing suicide, related to depression, he suggested. (TNA)
