NAKHON SI THAMMRAT, Dec 17 (TNA) – Flooding hit business areas in Nakhon Si Thammarat, forcing hundreds of shops to close on Monday.
Forest run-off has flowed to the provincial seat since 1 a.m. today following several days of heavy rain in the province.
Irrigation officials have worked to pump out and drain floodwater from the areas but a lot of garbage obstructed the operation. They had to remove all trash before they could run the pumps.
Flood is about 30-70 cms high on Pattanakarn Kukwang road, where an array of shops are located. People placed sandbags in front of their shops, which are temporarily closed.
Local residents have moved their belongings to higher ground and stay on the second floor.
They said the flooding was not as severe as that of last year but it caused them loss of income from selling goods ahead of the New Year festival.
Head of the local irrigation office said if there is no more rain and water drainage can continue, flood will recede within today.
Army chief General Apirat Kongsompong will inspect the flood situation in the province today to help flood victims. (TNA)
