BANGKOK, Nov 30 (TNA) – Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin does not agree with the proposed electricity tariff increase to 4.68 baht but acknowledges a potential upward trend.
Prime Minister emphasized the need for careful consideration to avoid excessive hikes, hinting at a review of the energy structure.
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) approved an increase in the retail FT rate for billing cycles from January to April 2024 to 0.89 baht per unit. This decision contributed to an average electricity rate increase of 0.69 baht per unit. Combined with the base electricity rate of 3.78 baht per unit, an overall average electricity cost will be 4.68 baht per unit (excluding value-added tax).
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the proposed power tariff, the Prime Minister said he would convene a meeting to address this matter due to the unacceptably high cost.
Regarding the possibility of reducing electricity bills as a continuous measure, he said further evaluation, including budget consideration, is required. The rate exceeding 4.60 baht, as speculated, is not feasible and would cause an impact on the people.
“While there is a tendency for an increase from the current rate of 3.99 Baht, it will not go as high as 4.50 or 4.68 baht. It must be a Win-Win situation for both producers and consumers, and the government must ensure this,” he said. -819 (TNA)
