BANGKOK, Sept 13 (TNA) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration warned rains would strike the whole capital this evening while the Royal Irrigation Department will dredge the Prawet Burirom canal to improve flood drainage in the city.
The public relations department of the BMA said on its Facebook page that rains were expected to continue from 4pm to 11pm and would affect Laksi, Bang Khen, Chatuchak, Lat Phrao, Phaya Thai, Din Daeng, Huai Khwang, Wang Thonglang, Bang Kapi, Watthana, Klong Toey and Suan Luang districts. It advised people to go home early.
The flow of the Chao Phraya River rose to 2,374 cubic meters per second in Bang Sai district of Ayutthaya. In Bangkok, the river can receive the flow rate at up to 2,500-3,000 cubic meters per second without overflowing.
Prapit Chanma, director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department, said that its Office of Mechanical Engineering would install four Hydroflo pumps at the Tha Thua pump station in the Prawet Burirom canal to quickly drain water from eastern Bangkok to the sea.
He also ordered the expansion of the canal just in front of the pump station to accelerate inflow into the pumps. The expansion would be completed in two days to relieve flooding in eastern Bangkok as much as possible, Mr Prapit said. (TNA)
